Room acoustics in offices and conference rooms-sound absorption: values and practical hints

What you hear is often different from what you see. Acoustically good room design is not so easy. A consultant should bring well-founded basic knowledge and practical experience. All shown and advertising-strongly published absorption values are to be evaluated in relation to the application in the room and the processing of the product. For example, a huge difference arises whether the sound absorbing material is directly applied to a hard surface or is mounted at a distance.

In this respect, the thickness of the material also plays a role. However, for the most part only in the mass as it increases the distance to the hard surface. In practical terms, this means that a thinner material achieves the same sound absorption when it is mounted at a distance. Depending on the application, a cost-benefit comparison between a. thick material and B. Thinner material with substructure makes sense.

Test curves according to En ISO11654

See picture attachments.

Measuring values and Measurement methods:

Absorption values are 0-100% or 0-1.

0 means no absorption-the sound is reflected to 100%

100% or factor 1 means the sound is absorbed to 100%-nothing is reflected

The measuring methods are precisely defined in standards.

The measured values are used to determine the summarized curves and values according to the relevant standards. e.g. en ISO11654 (European standard) or NRC (American Standard)

Absorption values greater factor 1 or greater 100%

Produced by the method according to the norm. In the room, so-called "edge or diffraction" effects are created, which distort the result from a logical point of view. See: Http://www.sengpielaudio.com/AbsorptionsgradGroesserEins.pdf

In fact, sound energy can only be absorbed to a maximum of 100%. Anything that goes beyond that would mean that nothing is absorbed.

Values that are determined according to the Norms en ISO11654 (European standard) or NRC (American Standard) are therefore all maximum 100% or maximum factor 1, as the individual values are rounded off according to standard regulation!

Placement of the absorbers in the room:

Free-standing absorption materials, such as control walls and desk partitions, are usually not covered by any Normtest. In practice, it can be assumed that the actual absorption values are much lower than the measured values according to the prospectus. Compare the absorption curve with (no) 0mm distance (image attachment)

In contrast, a significantly increased absorption is achieved in the corners of a room. Here the sound is reflected several times over the corner and an absorber placed in the corner can therefore absorb the sound energy multiple times.

In addition, the room structures and furnishing work together with all absorbers in the room. Where is how much sound energy is reflected or absorbed and where. With a slightly intelligent placement of absorbers and intelligent furnishing, which, for example, contains less reflective surfaces, the budget can be gently contributed to an acoustically pleasant atmosphere.

Sensitivity:

Acoustic measures are perceived to be better or worse only if the values are roughly halved or doubled. (actually raised)

This means that, depending on the size of the room and its quality, it does not do anything if a little absorber is installed. The additional absorption level can be measured, but is not perceived as an improvement.

A loud stress-reflective (ECHO) environment causes the hearing to be reduced. Similar to a protective mechanism, the nervous system reduces sensitivity to whole frequency ranges and volume levels. This means that people in such environments are no longer able to perceive subtle soft tones in the high and low frequency range. Similar to a digitally compressed bad phone connection, we can no longer perceive the subtle nuances in the sound. Volume dominates over details. Misunderstanding is happening quickly. It is more pleasant if you can feel the sounds of a nightingale in its entirety.
